The 6th UNWTO Silk Road Task Force Meeting took place in Urmia, Islamic Republic of Iran. The Event was organized by the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) with support of the Iranian Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts and Tourism Association (ICHTO) and the West Azerbaijan Province.
Masoud Soltanifar, Vice-President of the Islamic Republic of Iran and the President of ICHTO launched the Event with the following words: “We hope to cooperate with other countries, while bridging information dissemination, commercial and trade cooperation and cultural exchanges. In doing so, we will contribute to the promotion of the modern Silk Road spirit – contributing to world peace and development.”
More than 500 participants from 14 countries gathered at the meeting of the Task Force to discuss the key priorities of the Silk Road Action Plan 2016/2017, that is a unique platform to strengthen, improve competitiveness and sustainability of tourism within the Silk Road. The Plan also includes an overview of global trends affecting tourism with a view to reflect the issues and existing opportunities for tourism development in the present and in the future.
During the meeting, experts from UNESCO and participating countries have committed themselves to work on joint marketing, training, infrastructure development and visa facilitation.
Elena Baibakova, Director General of the International Center of Wine and Gastronomy, took part at the meeting of the Task Force on behalf of Russia and come forward with an initiative to develop a new direction "Gastronomic Routes on the Silk Road". The initiative was approved by the Task Force of the Meeting.
